Joel and Ethan Coen have written and directed fifteen feature films since 1984. To me, there is no single director or director team since that year that have produced a oeuvre of equaled to their levels. While they may not have the film knowledge compared to the likes of Scorcese, they understand Hollywood genres perhaps better than anyone else before and after them. The Coens are able to create films that resemble classic genres yet never truly be defined within those genres. Their ability to do this allows their films to still be reachable to the “common” movie-watcher yet still appeal to the cinephiles. They write dialogue that is humorous, perplexing, profound, and honest; others have tried to mimic their style but no one has ever come close. I don’t think we’ve really seen any filmmakers like the Coens before and I highly doubt we will see any like them after. They are too unique to mimic.
So to celebrate their achievements, these are what I feel are the top third of their oeuvre.Read less
