A list of my favourite, and/or I see as historically important films. Whilst I enthuse about the majority of titles on this list, others are a little flawed, but feature something or another that give them their place – for example, Alfred Hitchcock’s rather average ‘Torn Curtain’ is included purely for one scene and Jean-Luc Godard’s ‘Breathless’ is here for the editing, otherwise, I continue to have a mixed perception of the film.
Every film has to cross the ten minute mark and received a UK theatrical release or be perceived in the UK as a film. TV-films from other countries are allowed, as long as they were passed by the BBFC as “Film”.
Documentaries are also prohibited – exceptions are made for documentaries with more filmic mannerisms and semi-documentaries (‘Waltz with Bashir’, ‘Notes on Blindness’ etc).
Because of these rules, I realise that I’ve restricted myself from titles I’d otherwise recommend. Several single TV plays and short films, therefore, don’t make the list.Read less
