We need a list to acknowledge the immediate, strong, and continued affinity that cinema has with trains. The films listed here all have memorable train sequences…Apu and Durga running to catch a glimpse of a train in Pather Panchali, Buster Keaton’s antics in The General, the railroad in the westerns and many more.
Trains are cinema’s most protean and fluid metaphors – of innocence, nostalgia, hope, modernity. But above all, train sequences are downright thrilling to watch.
Given the enormity of the subject, I’ve kept the list as work in progress.
