Others have their favorites that differ very much from the films I’ve placed here, and I have some other films I may have listed, like Gojira, Mothra, Big Man Japan and Pacific Rim or (a film of yet another kind) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but this is a list I feel fairly happy to have made, as it challenges various notions about what one should value in this sort of film: like the (supposedly) most advanced special effects and what that term can be taken to mean. Others have their favorites that differ very much from the films I’ve placed here, and I have some other films I may have listed, like Gojira, Mothra, Big Man Japan and Pacific Rim or (a film of yet another kind) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but this is a list I feel fairly happy to have made, as it challenges various notions about what one should value in this sort of film: like the (supposedly) most advanced special effects and what that term can be taken to mean. Not all of these films privilege a personal over a collective vision. Dune, Blade Runner and A.I. Artificial Intelligence were initiated by people other than their respective directors and none should be taken as the work of a single author, though in each case the director was the one most responsible for how it ended up looking and feeling (especially through sensitive direction of experienced and well chosen casts.)
