Ulasan kami

After his compelling sex-addiction drama Shame, British director Steve McQueen aimed even higher with this blistering tale of pre-Civil War slavery. A visceral study on human inequality and oppression, 12 Years a Slave gained nine nominations and three wins at the 2014’s Academy Awards.

12 Years does not care to showboat; its defining quality is rigour, which it needs to convey real pain. Its formalism is directed at an emotional truth, one that resonates because McQueen is committed to it unflinchingly. This is Solomon Northup’s story. But in its conviction and style, this is very much Steve McQueen’s film.

To plunge us in the corporeal realities of slavery is precisely McQueen’s intention, and it’s debatable that an American filmmaker would be so explicit. Moreover, in a contemporary climate where black bodies are still discussed in depressingly evaluative terms… it’s not as if 12 Years a Slave is a fusty museum piece; rather, it’s an essential addition to an ongoing conversation about the representation of black bodies in the media.

The director’s choreography is so exact that one can imagine a wooden frame around each image, or a proscenium. The effect is akin to a series of moving paintings, or long scenes in an opera or a religious play. The film is pain, transformed into real art, useful art, art that triggers empathy and understanding. It takes Black history, White history and American history out of the past and says, “This is happening right now. To you.”

Apa yang orang lain katakan?

  • Adrian Sim's rating of the film 12 Years a Slave

Quite possibly the must-see movie of the year, though you will wanna scream in anger at the atrocities and injustices depicted on-screen. Boy, am I glad it's the provocative Steve McQueen at the helm and not Steven Spielberg.

  • ULA ZUHRA's rating of the film 12 Years a Slave

I don't understand how something so barbaric and animal could be accepted so profoundly in the past. It's inhumane and this film is the most honest portrayal about it. How the other slaves wouldn't bat an eye while another group was being beaten. Incredible. It hurts too much to keep watching, I needed a break every few minutes, I was completely depressed. Patsey, oh Patsey, you deserve ALL the awards for this.

  • Gonçalo's rating of the film 12 Years a Slave

Kinda baffles me when people say it doesn't have the McQueen touch. It was much rawer than Shame, which was good but kinda average when compared to Hunger. This one has Hunger's rawness and violence, along with all his directing particularities, but it's my favorite of the three because it just has the biggest heart. 12 Years a Slave shows that McQueen is not only a great visual artist: he's also a great storyteller.

  • Adam Kustura's rating of the film 12 Years a Slave

It's a true story, What more could you want? I don't even care about artistic elements when it comes to films like this. Anyone wasting their time talking about cinematography or American accents or whatever can go jump off a cliff. And I see all my fellow white people calling this "Oscar bait" or a "white guilt" movie, I have one piece of advice for you; shut the fuck up and learn to deal with your own history.

  • The Future Mr. Gitts's rating of the film 12 Years a Slave

McQueen handles the material perfectly. Uncompromising without being punishing. Affecting without sentimentality. Horrific without sensationalism. Just riveting experiential storytelling. Maybe the definitive cinematic statement on American slavery? A trio of great performances (Ejiofor, Fassy, Nyong'o). My main gripe: too many famous actors in minor roles; it's distracting. And Pitt's not a great fit. 4.5, probably

  • FISCHER's rating of the film 12 Years a Slave

  • ig_____or's rating of the film 12 Years a Slave

It clearly is McQueen's most political film, true Oscar-bait material (and rightfully so) that sure must be close to the heart of the director. An outstanding cast, efective script and beautiful cinematography allow for a nicely paced story that just grabs your attention at every single scene. After three films, McQueen is already one of the best, but I hope he doesn't forget his indie origins.

  • letters never sent's rating of the film 12 Years a Slave

Have you ever felt guilty for not being impressed by a film? Don't get me wrong, the performances were impeccable, the cinematography was breathtaking. Yet, I still I felt it was lacking. It was too clinical and detached unlike a Bergman film. Bergman has mastered his touch on humanity, you can't help but feel the punch in the gut, that was missing here. I felt a lot was lost in favour of style & technical precision.
