While it’s reasonably faithful to the source novel, it’s also 100 percent a De Palma film, piling enough perverse eroticism, winking Alfred Hitchcock allusions, tricky compositions, and athletic camera moves to be remembered first and foremost as an auteur work.

The first, arguably best Stephen King novel birthed the first, arguably best filmed Stephen King adaptation. In Carrie’s classic climax, every element speaks to the detailed work of art director Jack Fisk and cinematographer Mario Tosi: the color palette, the lighting, the editing, and especially the split-screen. The scenario comes alive: the stage, the doors, the decoration—Fisk’s work has a semiotic quality, and normalcy becomes infernal under the framing and tempo of a master like De Palma.

De Palma’s ballsy formal irony – mystically fogged slow dollies of the female locker room, an accelerating spinning shot of slow dancing to deceivingly suggest romantic bliss – is used to hypnotic effect, seducing the eyes even as it lays bare the ugly cosmic imbalance that ushers Carrie towards eternal insecurity. Still one of the most relentless portrayals of all-encompassing adolescent anxiety in cinema…

Apa yang orang lain katakan?

  • El Biffo's rating of the film Carrie

Re-watched this 42 years later and I am giving it 4.5* Piper Laurie and Sissy Spacek both amazing and I had forgotten all about Travolta in full Sweat-hog mode. When I was 14, I thought cinema was all about Wertmuller, Bunuel, Truffaut and Altman, and had trouble appreciating this as anything more than teen-oriented entertainment. I was a film snob. Now I realize that it is finely-crafted teen-oriented entertainment.

  • chanandre's rating of the film Carrie

[LEFF’ 12] Finally watched this on a big screen. Glad I waited. De Palma on the big screen is fireworks.

  • Samuel T.'s rating of the film Carrie

Haven't watched since I was like 10. I first watched, as many movies as a kid, with my Mom. To this day, on rare occasion, she'll belt out "They're all gonna laugh at you!" (context varies). This made me incredibly happy. I cried. Also, that rotating camera on the prom floor, that palette, Sissy's eyes, that shifting split screen, Nancy... I am utterly satiated.

  • Renton47's rating of the film Carrie

Not De Palma's most formally ambitious, and the fact that Carrie is waylaid out of narrative suggests that he'd also rather spend time with the cool kids. Spacek sells it though, both in her alienation and the speed with which she shows she's willing to adapt. It's in this conflict that the film prevails, the accident of nightmare-fulfillment when some try to break tradition. It's all in those final shots of Spacek.

  • smndvdcl's rating of the film Carrie

Saw this for the first time at a Somerset House open-air cinema night-time screening in central London a couple of years ago. It was shown in tandem with 'Mean Girls' which was a bizarrely apt cinematic double bill. The majority of this film plays like a school-set teen movie, but the domestic religious extremism and TK undertones build this De Palma masterpiece to its horrific crescendo. Spacek is sensational.

  • Palmat's rating of the film Carrie

A classic! De Palma brings some real drama and flair to King´s story and delivers both humanity and tragedy and thrills. Spacek and Laurie really knocks it out of the park with their acting and the supporting cast is good as well. The photography and editing is also very good and I have to mention Donaggio's riveting and beautiful score. Love this!

  • Harry Rossi's rating of the film Carrie

Captivating movie. I honestly found this to be more sad than actually scary although it is quite disturbing. Spacek is absolutely incredible. The scenes between Carrie and her mom were just amazing and very fucked up and hard to watch. I also loved the things about this film that are incredibly 70s such as the split screen and the fast motion and such. 3rd DePalma I've seen and I really loved it. Fuck the reamake(s)!

  • T. J. Harman's rating of the film Carrie

Better than I remembered it being as a kid. The Psycho-esque violins every time Carrie gets upset haven't aged so well but overall the good use of De Palma's style and Spacek & Laurie's acting make this a classic.Could a popcorn movie w/ this grim a view of humanity get made today? One of the rare thrillers whose ending has been completely "spoiler''ed by pop culture but loses not of it's devasting power.
