Free Fire Diarahkan oleh Ben Wheatley
About a third of the way in, this nihilistic lark begins its long, tiresome climax… The characters exist primarily as sets of quippy mouths, ornately mustachioed faces, and trigger-happy fingers. The camera sticks close to each of them in turn as they worm their respective ways through the ochre rubble. They get shot, bleed, resign themselves to dying. Not much joy here, not a lot of beauty, but at least Free Fire has decibels to spare.

The ‘70s-set plot involves an arms deal in an abandoned warehouse gone horribly wrong, but the particulars aren’t especially important. What is important is that Wheatley takes just about every Die Hard-style action movie trope to its furthest limit. Remember the scenes of John McClane dragging his bloodied torso around the Nakatomi Plaza? Well, pretty much every character spends most of the movie doing that, except in far more excruciating detail.

The dominant tone is cacophony… Who’s really been asking for this journey back to 1992? Free Fire is more often reminiscent of the cash-in Tarantino-esque titles that invaded video stores after Pulp Fiction, time capsules like 2 Days in the Valley, City of Industry, or 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag, rather than being a new or exciting thing of its own. A wallow in aggro unpleasantness and dated irony, the film plays like Wheatley’s big middle finger to viewers.

  • Nicholas Gregory's rating of the film Free Fire

Free Fire's hook is that it's a 90-minute film that becomes fully an extended shootout after the 30-minute mark. It's honestly not much of a surprise that the film gets incredibly repetitive in these action mechanizations after not that long during this hour due to being just about action, akin to porn. Like all Wheatley films-- besides his great Kill List-- he amps up the spectacle, but it fumbles as a whole.

  • Zachary T.'s rating of the film Free Fire

When I first started making little movies of my own, all I wanted to do was stage ridiculous, silly shootouts. The joyous, boyish, oh-well-fuck-it-then energy of "Free Fire" had me thinking fondly of my teens, equipped with a camcorder, After Effects, air-compressed squibs and plenty of air-soft guns. The characters are huge, the dialogue is snappy, and at a taut, fat-free 91 minutes, it makes the most of its set-up.

  • Palmat's rating of the film Free Fire

Despite a stellar cast and a great director this fell unbelievably short condisering the talent involved. After a quite amusing first reel the movie really comes to a standstill as soon as the shooting starts. You don't really feel any sympathy for any of the characters and after a while you stop caring all together. Sure, there are flashes of inspiration and some cool sequences but they are too few and far between.

  • saitosouta's rating of the film Free Fire

This is worst gunfight movie ever, which means this is best "anti" gunfight movie ever. Though very strange & awkward is the gunfight of people who's shot thousand times but can't be dead, more weirdly this is constructed by all the scenes which're usually cut in gun movie because, if not, this one becomes dull. All the more "Free Fire" works as the movie about "Gun is ugly & uncool, right?" Highly interesting gem.

  • Jason's rating of the film Free Fire

Lots of people I respect have been laying a serious beatdown on these last two Wheatley features. I guess I like them because I'm an idiot. That's insincere. I think I'm brilliant. HIGH-RISE and FREE FIRE feel to me like slyly cerebral works of conceptual art or filmed gallery installations. FREE FIRE is fascinating for me because of its combination of chaos and a kind of zen stasis.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Free Fire

Considering the director, the minimalist plotting and the mindless violence this really should have been a lot more fun. Strange that its been 25 years since 'Reservoir Dogs' and we're still getting films like this. Enjoyable enough at times but nothing special. Best in show performance wise would be Jack Reynor and a suave as hell Armie Hammer.

  • Filipe F. Coutinho's rating of the film Free Fire

The problem of having Whitley and Jump edit the film: pacing. High Rise suffered from the same problem. Also, the geography is confusing, which should never happen in a film that takes place in one location. One master would have sufficed. That said, it was fun, genre-y in the best way and totally original. Also, I'm still waiting for the internet to make a remix of Copley saying "get the case" over and over again.

  • Ethan's rating of the film Free Fire

This is a perfectly orchestrated and choreographed film that is nothing but action the whole way through and offering up some sharp dark humor that makes this feel like if Reservoir Dogs was all about the shootout. The ensemble cast is perfect too with Brie Larson being amazing, Cillian Murphy being a badass and Armie Hammer and Sharlto Copely offering up some really good laughs. This is a fun and intense ride.
