How to make a serial killer film a comedy, explained by Almodovar. A seriously underrated film here, I find, when this is easy to watch, entertaining, speaks about violence and society and media voyeuristic fascination with small stories.
In the middle of all the deception, incest, screwball comedy and social commentary; there's a beautifully orchestrated cum shot that reaches the heights of Almodovar's best cinematic moments! Sadly though, the final product is a lesser Almodovar affair than others. Still, its a good show and well worth the watch compared to most movies.
Not many films could use humour to make rape scene funny in a way that actually makes a serious point about how men, society and the police don't take sexual violence seriously. This film is classic Almodovar with all his tropes.
Almodóvar puts his twist on material that could easily be Hitchcockian thriller style, if it wasn't also weaving in and out of the darkly comedic territory that he has made his playground throughout most of his filmography. Verónica Forqué is a delight in the titular role, mileage varies with the other performances.
An odd film that one can afford to miss. I have yet to see a truly great work from the director--I am still looking. Peter Coyote must be regretting his role here. The only interesting trivia is the information the film provides about writers who kill their spouses--William Burroughs and Louis Althusser.
