I admire Tim Heidecker's hustle and his ability to subvert the concept of comedy with many surrealist diversions. That doesn't mean I have to like it. Frankly, I find most of his projects unenjoyable. "Mister America" is a faux vérité mockumentary that's as inert and low-energy as Heidecker's character. We're watching this hell unfold in America, we don't need a schlocky, hastily made film about a contemptible cad.
Self-belief is never strong enough on its own to bring forth success. A mockumentary stuffed with understated gags satirizing consequence-free white male mediocrity that skirts the edge of discomfort, but never surrenders to the allure of outright cringe comedy, which has, as of late, become an easy out in the arena of the comedy feature film. Those without On Cinema foreknowledge will find plenty to latch onto too.
A reasonably funny (though undoubtably slight) continuation of the On Cinema universe that is a complete rip off of the Shaggy D.A. This movie gets 5 bags of popcorn (because 5 bags is the limit of the rating system) and 2 bags of soda. I am excited for #Whaleman.
In Tim Heidecker's long-con to be the contemporary preeminent Dadaist comedian, this film is a plea for legitimacy. I've watched a lot of Mr.Heidecker's work in the past year and a half with a somewhat distant intrigue but nevertheless find his commitment as a whole more compelling than the pieces. This film is funny because it exhibits the distinct entitlement by the reactionary, inauthentically motivated person.
