Mr. Long Diarahkan oleh Hiroyuki Tanaka (SABU)
It’s basically an off-beat yakuza-and-ramen riff on The Outlaw Josey Wales, helped immensely by Chang’s charisma, evident even when playing a deadpan menace.

It begins as a blood-soaked martial-arts film before morphing into social drama then melting into a tender romance, then switching back to an edge-of-your-seat thriller culminating in tear-drenched drama. It could’ve been a mess, but Sabu expert direction, together with an understated performance by lead actor Chang Chen, made for a masterful piece of storytelling.

Some people might be slightly irritated if, before breakfast, they were to watch a movie in which more than twenty people are massacred in the first five minutes. But, in the case of Mr. Long (selected to compete in this years Berlinale), the massacre of an assortment of evil gangsters sets the perfect, wild tone for this, a most unique and innovative cinematic experience.

  • Tye-J's rating of the film Mr. Long

Loved this. Great drama around a bounty hunter escaping after a failed assignment and hiding in a small village, becoming part of a small family and starting some kind of new life. But the violent past is approaching. Great cinematography and style, great actors. Very recommended.

  • Sarah's rating of the film Mr. Long

there was physical splatter-like violence against mainly unknown men. the very heavy psychological abuse however was against a child and his mother. the mother also gets raped and beaten by a man. unnecessary uneaven violence, which even didn't make the plot better. there were very interesting parts too and I even had to laugh from time to time. soundtrack was good. cinematography too.

  • Tibulle85's rating of the film Mr. Long

  • Paul's rating of the film Mr. Long

Mr. Long starts of fairly conventional but develops into a prosperous beautiful tale that finds magic in its normal day setting. It can be quite touching but there were many story beats that I found to be to close to the genre tropes and unnecessary dark - which left me quite annoyed sometimes. It is still worth seeing just for the beautiful score and the breaking very silent and small bursts of emotion.

  • Bruno's rating of the film Mr. Long

Not your usual East Asian hitman flick. The actors are incredibly good and like in so many other East Asian movies you just want to watch all of the ten actors on screen very closely, so you rewind again and again. Choreography of the fights could be better and sometimes the sentimentality is unbearable.

  • Andreas Holz's rating of the film Mr. Long

So, apparently there's no such thing as child welfare or even anything remotely resembling any kind of law in Japan, eh? Anyway, what a fucking great fairytale! Worth watching for visuals and sound alone.

  • jeanlice's rating of the film Mr. Long

there is one scene when hitman-gone-hawker Long has a dream of the subject of his failed hit finding him on the street behind Long's food cart preparing noodles and asks out of sheer perplexity something along the lines of "which hitman turns into a chef preparing noodles?!?". that line describes the whole dilemma of this film perfectly.
