Cinema. I'm not an Almodovarian but sometimes some of his films reach a personalized note that instigates an intrusive and inventive formality. This is not the case, although it is a very frank and honest film, rare in this respect. Almodóvar famous melodramatic maturity is also uninspiring in formal terms. Here we have expected rhymes and passages, no more. Banderas became a huge actor.
CINEMA _ It might be one of Almodovar´s most personal film but i was never very responsive to his cinema all the same. It is full of colors, with a careful attention to costumes and settings but i don´t always understand where the big emotional scenes come from. I like how the childhood memories appear in the film and the way transitions work, smoothly from a shot and a period to the other. Not overwhelmed though.
Definitely Almo's most personal and autobiographical picture to date. "Dolor y Gloria" is a very moving portrait of a man at the crossroads of his own life, but one that sometimes feels a tiny bit rushed.
ALMODOMIRROR. A shimmering film with gorgeous men, passion & very strong & emotional moments. Too bad the author is pitying a little too much on his addictions and on himself. === Un film chatoyant avec des hommes magnifiques et des moments passionnels & émotionnels très forts. Dommage que l'auteur s’apitoie un peu trop sur ses addictions et sur lui-même.
FNC / MTL / 2019 / Entry 4: Almodóvar's latest opus might just be his most personal, honest and one of his greatest achievements. Banderas gives the performance of a lifetime with this subtle and quiet filmmaker in a mid-life and artistic crisis. The cinematography is gorgeous, colorful. Its a film that develops and deepens gradually, layer by layer, until the very end. A beautiful ode to love, pain and cinema.
Pain and Glory will not survive the weight of time, mainly because there's this apathy about Salvador's journey that rushes the character's likeability. Trying to be so personal, Almodóvar nearly forgot his own strenghts: drama, art direction, magical realism, love, desire and the politics of sex. Yes, there's a little bit of everything here, but rushed to the point of no return. Good? Yes. But nearly forgettable.
Almodovar’s truly soulful scenes are those in which Salvador wants to ask the questions he never does, say the things he never finds the courage to say, do what he knows he can’t.These sentiments are played to utter perfection by Banderas in what is a career-defining performance. His rendition of Almodovar is subtle on the outside, immense on the inside. Full review: https://letterboxd.com/fifeco/film/pain-and-glory/
