Our take

In this adaptation of Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz’s novel, Polish master Andrzej Wajda unexpectedly collaborated with actress Krystyna Janda, who within the fiction opens up about her real-life husband’s death. From this bewildering film-within-a-film pattern emerges an unforgettable cinematic experience.
