Muted, elegiac melodrama of post-WWII German reconstruction that skirts intriguingly around PHOENIX territory before succumbing to the tropes of BBC period drama; a cut above the average as such, but could have been so much more interesting.
Overwrought performances and score. Laughably melodramatic script and direction. Amazing the script was greenlit, and amazing Keira Knightley's character/performance was so nonsensical. If she lived in London for 5 years during WWII, she would have been busy with relief work of all sorts. Possibly a rewrite focusing primarily on the German girl, the camps, and the 88 Underground would have been less cliched.
