One of my favorite fantasy movies and one of the most magical. The movie stole my heart when I saw it the first time and I still find it captivating with great ideas, beautiful images and absurd characters. Marianne Faithful's song at the end is the final drop that makes this one of my favorite French movies in the genre. It also is not afraid of blending darkness with strange humor.
This has been my #1 favorite movie of all time and it always will be. Also...this is what made me love Ron Perlman. It's too bad he is in so many bad things these days so often. He really is so much better than that. Regardless, there's no real way to explain a movie like this...but don't listen to the bad reviews....they just didn't get it or something. It's really an incredibly good movie... the story is great too.
It's like a cartoon come to life. The visuals are nothing short of stunning; they burst with color and life and the framing and camera work is always inspired. I love the world that was created. The downfall is that the story, while it is emotional and has moments of great beauty, never really hooked me in completely. It felt like it was secondary to the visuals. Overall, though, a thoroughly enjoyable film.
Oh boy! We're off to the races with this amazing film. Again a film that would ruin it to tell too much. It is visually arresting and conceptually unique. It is dark with moments of comedy that keep you riveted to your seat. The ideas abound in this film, exploding on the screen with such panache it takes your breath away. If you enjoy, fine cinematography and art direction, don't wait, I love this film. See it!
Genius visual adventure! From cinematography to editing to costuming to effects, this film was before the Matrix, before Guillermo del Toro, before the everyday of today. Watching it is just like Delicatessen, a true feast!
I wanted to cut this film up into small bite sized bits and eat them for months. Every frame is sumptuously detailed with breathtaking visuals. This was my introduction to Ron Perlman having not seen Beauty and the Beast. Judith Vittet turns in one of the best child performances I've ever seen.
As an adolescent, this was a strange & nightmarish fantasia that thrilled on a level of imagery & imagination. A few years on & it now seems empty & inappropriate. Putting young children in situations of clear distress to serve a flimsy narrative is irresponsible. Likewise, the central relationship unquestioningly flirts with suggestions of paedophilia. The whole thing feels insensitive; reducing people to objects.
As a story it hangs together very sloppily, but luckily some of the performances and most of the camerawork is interesting enough to keep it compelling throughout. Highly flawed but still worth watching for novelty's sake.
