A "classic" for people who know very little about film. Mildly entertaining upon first visit, but overblown praise has essentially ruined any potential for discussion. The narrative and narration are melodramatic, and its customary slot on Saturday afternoon TV has wrung out all watchability.
Not a "bad" film at all, but vastly overrated. Are you seriously going to argue that this is THE greatest film of all time?? (It is according to a general consensus of IMDB reviewers.) Cmon folks, get serious. If you are one of those who really believe that, then let me have some of what you were smoking when you watched it. Afterwards, Ill show you some MUCH better films.
I don't hate this one. But it is far, very far, from the best movies I've ever seen. It is a decent movie, but not a great one, at least for me. I have quite some reasons in my head. One is for its two-dimensional characters--especially the villain. Two, for its straight self-righteous and too much sappy talkings. Last, I didn't find it so special. It's not that bad, really, but absolutely not a great one.
I watched the movie after reading the story... And I found the Frank Darabont script to be an excellent adaptation of the original story by Stephen King, even improving it in some aspects. "The Mist", "The Green Mile" and "The Shawshank Redemption"... King and Darabont make an amazing duo! This is such a good story about hope and preserverance. Robbins, Freeman and Gunton (as the evil Norton) were great!
While not THE #1 of all time, this is storytelling at its absolute finest. Two brilliantly captivating performances and a wonderful adapted screenplay, this is still one of the best films of the '90s. 5/5
