Les demoiselles de Rochefort

Jacques Demy Perancis, 1967

Stefan Drees's rating of the film The Young Girls of Rochefort

One of the great European musicals: Michel Legrand's score is surprisingly manifold in incorporating different stylistic features. Norman Maen did a great job in creating the choreography (strongly influenced by the 1961 "West Side Story" choreography of Jerome Robbins). And the mostly colorful (but also - in the piano - store, white) set and costume design ensures an artificial and somewhat dreamlike atmosphere.
