It's not easy to make a love story. To actually make a good love story. And the title sums up why. The duration of a film requires a very long engagement. We must be seduced, compelled, enticed for the whole duration of the film. It is a very long engagement. It is really easy to break that spell. To do something corny or to spoil the harmony, to overdo it, or to shy away from making us fall in love with the story.
A sprawling epic love story set against WWI with fine performances and sumptuous cinematography and a cracking sweeping score. The cast is great but I am not that comletely sold on the chemistry between Tatou and Ulliel which hampers the movie considerably for me. And the movie sometimes loses its momentum due to its long running time. Apart from this there is not much to complain about.
Gustame que é unha peli bastante cabrona e moi amarga. Por contra hai que aguantar de novo a Audery Tatou, e o que é pior, o que fai de mozo lelo (vaia persoaxe máis odiosa). A Cotillard si que ten un papel chulo, carallo. Ela e o da moto.
Some breathtaking scenes, fairy tale scenary . Visually, it deserves 5 stars. The plot may be a little confusing: at first, 3 of the 5 condemned to death looked very similar to me :). Anyway, it's a refreshing film, plenty of war anecdotes that sometimes seem unlikely. A childhood love, a tender story about hope and determination. I liked this film more than Delicatessen (even if it has a higher rating..here).
A very devastating and intriguing look at WWI through the perspective of a war-torn romance that's balanced colorfully with outrageous quirks and tender reflections of love, building a vibrant melodrama on the futility of war and the longing for hope in a blood-stained society through its glowing cinematography and soulful performances.
2.7 stars. Sweet and touching, but simultaneously so concerned with being "sweet" and "touching" and looking "sweet" and "touching", that you desperately grasp onto the performances (which, luckily, are very fine!) as a point of authentic, emotional attachment. One could argue this is exactly what a love story needs, however it made me miss the visual gimmicks of the early works! I do like a protag with OCD though.
