It is difficult to write about a John Cassavetes film. His work, which is so elusive and textured in form and style, is deeply experiential. Watching his films is an immersive, enthralling, and often challenging experience. . . . Chance, banality, and humor interweave throughout the film to paint a picture of its characters’ lives which are at once simple and profound.

Its strength is that it really does seem like the character played by Timothée Chalamet made the film himself. Who else but an actual actor-director would end his film by staring tearfully into a fireplace in winter because he’s realized he will always be separate from other human beings, even though he spent last summer having sex in Lombardy with two kind and very attractive people (Armie Hammer and Esther Garrel)?

Shinkai’s film is structurally similar to Kei Horie’s teen melodrama on love and memory, Forget Me Not, and bears some of the same heartbreaking effects as Johnnie To’s Romancing in Thin Air, proving once and for all that the best melodrama is coming out of Japan these days.

Call me By Your Name. By my name. By our name. Call me names. Any names. Just call me. Think of me. Let summer last our whole life. Let them abs remain unaltered as our minds read Greek poems or german translations of French novels. Let us dance till we fall. Fall till we're hold. Puke till we're rescued. Love till it hurts. Hurt till it scars. Live till it ends. It will, but we rode bikes, ate apricots&swam in love.

  • dionysus67's rating of the film Call Me by Your Name

Quite an original narrative to gay romance aided by a naturalist aesthetic. This is transformed into an ontology of a normality, as spontaneous, as socially uncalibrated -over and above the family's and Oliver's academically liberal yet upper middle-class veneer- as unreflective as plantlike nature can be. This blossoming comes across with ingenuity with no risk of idealization of the ability to defy one's habitus.

  • saitosouta's rating of the film Call Me by Your Name

  • Skinnedteen's rating of the film Call Me by Your Name

Guadagnino captures the masterful illusion of Elio and Oliver's desire for each other. Who wouldn't fall in love with Chalamet and Hammer's alluring presence and chemistry in front of the camera? The prolonged shots are like memories that you don't want to end. You're seduced by the colours of summer on the gorgeous architectures of Italy while Sufjan Stevens strums his banjo whispering your feelings to your ears.

  • Matthew Martens's rating of the film Call Me by Your Name

4.3. Half a star deducted due to being repeatedly kicked off sugar mountain by the gratuitous, dubious grace of Sufjan Stevens' voice (sorry!), and another .2 due to my slight (and shameful) shame at being so ravished by all this overripe, achingly perishable beauty, which constantly threatens to become merely pretty--but never (rarely?) does. "Do you know how happy I am that we slept together?" Total disarmament.

  • Huey McEvoy's rating of the film Call Me by Your Name

There is literally nothing wrong with this film. It's faultless. Being 17 and in love hurts like hot bees, no matter how much fucking gorgeous Italian countryside you have to hide in. Hammer and Stuhlbarg are perfect, but Chalamet gives what is easily the best performance I've seen all year.

  • Bilouaustria's rating of the film Call Me by Your Name

Except for this beautiful oner on the piazza, i find Guadagnino too shy. The cinematography captures the summer light but the direction has little to offer. What stays is the great performance of Chalamet. I would not say that much of Hammer. Ivory´s script is solid but this overly cultivated family looks also a bit cliché to me. I can´t believe they want to shoot a sequel out of it, that will be without me for sure.

  • Jason's rating of the film Call Me by Your Name

Its pretty easy to imagine James Ivory's script being turned into a schmaltzy watered-down cocktail, so we should be all the more emphatic in applauding the extraordinary ensemble effort (technicians included) that makes CALL ME BY YOUR NAME so remarkable. I had heard that Michael Stuhlbarg was supposed to have a rousing speech. I am prepared to by cynical about such things. Surprise. It blew my goddamn brains out.
