Mother! Regissert av Darren Aronofsky
Far too often, critics limit their analysis to the level of narrative and character—which is probably why Darren Aronofsky’s mother! was so poorly received. Its filmmaking is a PhD thesis on precision and tone: along with the formal limitations that stitch us into the Jennifer Lawrence character’s head far more successfully than shaky-cam fake found footage ever could, mother! deftly juggles a series of very different types of pressures.

The first half of Mother! is enjoyable enough, if only because it’s so beautifully photographed (by Matthew Libatique) and because it dramatizes a horror regularly experienced but only rarely represented on screen, at least not since Luis Buñuel’s The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie… My objection is that Aronofsky isn’t much interested in his characters’ complexity or humanity, but purely in his own big concepts.

Long ago impatient with Aronofsky’s literal-minded approach to subjective cinema, I was happily surprised to settle into this seamlessly bonkers movie and its first-person view of domestic and global apocalypse. While the malleable allegory of the film’s events… has fueled both love-or-hate reactions and directorial marketing, I was riveted by the heedless spectacle and totally enveloping film technique.

where's me bucket? what a pathetic despicable film. corny. nonsensical. Another entry for the basket of deplorable misogynistic male-gaze flicks. I'm done.

  • Wee Hunk's rating of the film Mother!

The artist is self-important and impotent. The problem is the nagging wife. He gets her pregnant because that will shut her up, and he's reborn. He is successful again. His fans arrive, and they provide the love he needs. The problem is that she's still so needy. So they beat the crap out of her. The director tries to cloak this as religious allegory. It's another misogynist take on the artist and the muse. cont.

  • Huey McEvoy's rating of the film Mother!

With its heavy lashings of bible-black wit, it defiantly earns its place in the pantheon of classic alegorical psychodramas: Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, The Wicker Man, Don't Look Now, Eraserhead, Antichrist, Under the Skin etc. The biblical and environmental metaphors may be more overt, but for me it was interesting to view the events as a manifestation of her deepest fears as a woman, wife, daughter and mother.

  • Gia de Almeida's rating of the film Mother!

This film gave me such anxiety. Of course the biblical and nature allegories are the most straight forward interpretations but there are so many interpretations for this, so many digs at society; religion; the artistic mind and creative process; patriarchy; inequality in relationships; worship of false idols... you name it, it's there. I can't think of a single bad thing to say about this film. I'm still rattled.

  • Zachary T.'s rating of the film Mother!

Sarah Kane's wounded deconstructions of perversion and ironically perverted fixation on malice, parabolic use of space, and flat-circle timelines are filtered through Żuławski's manic lens, with spectacularly disquieting POV camerawork bobbing and weaving with the isolated Lawrence in her finest performance to date. A distressing, yet singular experience; one to be greatly admired if not necessarily enjoyed.

  • OFF_FRAME's rating of the film Mother!

The battle between the private and public selves; the unconstrained ego and it's self-destructive thirst for fame and recognition at all costs. Birth and creation, dissatisfaction and self annihilation. 3.5 stars

  • HenriqueA's rating of the film Mother!

Rating a film like this feels pointless. It may be ✦✦✦✦✦ right now or ✦ in a couple of days. It took my breath away and drove me mad a couple of times, with both outright genius and pretty lame moments. The chamber drama was agonizing but it worked better than the unhinged balls to the walls ending. I'm sorry that Jennifer Lawarence was turned into a punchline for this, 'cos she's amazing whenever she's not screaming

  • André Vieira's rating of the film Mother!

A loop filled with gratuitous violence (seriously THAT scene was too fucked up), biblic references, Javier Bardem's terrifying presence, uninvited guests, a rave, the meaning of life and Jennifer's flawless hour-glass figure.
