The innovations of Mad Max have been so thoroughly ripped off that it’s easy to insufficiently appreciate the freshness of its grim, primitive futurism. Not the first post-apocalyptic movie, George Miller’s debut nonetheless stands out for the plausibility of its bleak vision.

A future of endless horizontal sprawls and hopped-up gearheads is the perfect fit for the keen novice director, his camera hurtles from one asphalt jockey to another to capture the slapstick of crisscrossing vehicles.

Just as in Violence in the Cinema Part 1, Miller sculpts a dystopian vision of the space between body and machine where both are ceaselessly meshed together, the space only ruptured when the machine turns the body into its hapless prey.

  • Nicholas Gregory's rating of the film Mad Max

Not good or bad in a steady sense, as outside of its great stunt work, it’s poorly paced, cartoonishly written, and dull when without action. Yet, it always has this knowing charm and B-film flavor to it. But only the opening action sequence and Gibson’s odyssey of revenge click. And it clicks profoundly, so that’s it’s sad the vengeance is only in the last 15 minutes. The whole film should’ve had a po’d Gibson.

  • Scorpio Velvet's rating of the film Mad Max

This is where it all begins. The first film had some okay moments while it had some brilliant action-packed moments (the beginning & ending) and is focused on its storyline & characters (including Max). Though, I always preferred the second film because it was way more entertaining (even iconic) & interesting than the first or third films.

  • Warren Spratley's rating of the film Mad Max

Action as THE absolute representation of aesthetics & of ethics. Does any other film move like this, relate to the viewer's nervous system in such a peculiar way? The road, the landscape, & the motor vehicle--a complex amalgamation of material parts--consistently reveal the interpersonal, the strange social & psychological spaces these characters occupy & apprehend. The horrifying masculine philosophy: retribution.

  • Ozu_Teapot's rating of the film Mad Max

I originally found Mad Max disappointing having watched it after Mad Max 2 (a favorite film). It seemed too "ordinary", too much a straightforward revenge thriller, but re-watching now I think it's grown on me!

  • msmichel's rating of the film Mad Max

The ultimate OZ exploitation film that created an iconic character and kick started an entire genre of post apocalyptic films. Miller's film was like a high octane shot of adrenaline when it debuted and its power has not decreased. Full of impressive stunt work and a somewhat subversive attitude towards violence that worked against the accepted parameters of the time period. Nice to finally see the non-dub version.

  • Palmat's rating of the film Mad Max

A laughable and woeful movie of every level. The writing is terrible as is the acting. The production work is solid though but the car stunts have not aged well at all. I can not help but wonder if the homo erotic overtones were meant to be obvious or not.

  • This is Jake Kath's rating of the film Mad Max

Sometimes its hard to express my love for this movie! My 14 year old self and my 21 year old self fucked each other last night as watched with bedroom eyes! Everything is so exciting to me about this! The cheese, the practicality of the car chase scenes, the socioeconomic implications! Hell I even love the anticlimactic ending! Good times, my friends!

  • João Eça's rating of the film Mad Max

a complete non-sense... there's not much of an apocalypse and there's not much of an australian landscape... there are plenty of bikes and action, though... they're just not very interesting... besides, the soundtrack was freaking pretentious (worthy of an Herzog picture) rated 2 out of 5 thanks to some nice direction effort of doing something with all the utter mess
