Sang sattawat

Synopsis

A film in two parts which echo each other. The two protagonists are inspired by the filmmaker’s parents, in the years before they became lovers. The first part focuses on a woman doctor, and the second on a male doctor, set further ahead in time.

Syndromes and a Century Regissert av Apichatpong Weerasethakul
The more you pinpoint the film’s central dualities – female/male, country/city, sunlight/electric light, then/now and so on – the more it starts to sound like one of Apichatpong’s gallery pieces or installations: an art object rather than a movie. The paradox is that it plays just fine in the cinema. This is partly down to the film’s humour and the rhythms of its pacing and editing, which make it richer and more rewarding at a purely sensual level than the average mainstream movie.

The unpredictable and provocative Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Tropical Malady) offers a mysterious and beautiful experimental feature (2006) based on memories of his parents, who were both doctors… There’s nothing here that resembles narrative urgency, but this is a quiet masterpiece, delicate and full of wonder.

Applying the generic “masterpiece” tag to any of the decidedly unassuming films of Apichatpong “Joe” Weerasethakul does his work a disservice, as applicable as it may often be. Be prepared to see the label bandied about with increased frequency should Syndromes and a Century, the Thai filmmaker’s fourth feature, find U.S. release. Not to set the bar too high, but I’ll happily join the choir, as Syndromes may well be the filmmaker’s most assured, complex, and rewarding film to date.
