Scorsese’s smooth-running, three-hour-plus film clears a very low bar to reveal “Where we are today” — the maxim that Sixties reviewers used for socially conscious generation-gap movies, now brought back to praise millennial nihilism.

An extraordinary feat of rejuvenation, and not just because of the digital effects that turned its lead actors back into young(ish) men.

  • Lynch/Fellini's rating of the film The Irishman

Scorsese is a true cinematic master and here has made a crime epic that feels especially mature and compulsively watchable. I don't think he could have made this film 20 years ago or even 10 or 5 years ago because I think that his age and perspective on things is at the heart of this film and I find that to be really beautiful!

  • Z's rating of the film The Irishman

A stone cold masterpiece from master filmmaker Martin Scorsese. Contains so much nuance, humor, horror and sadness. I am still reeling from the experience of watching this film. A triumph for De Niro, Scorsese never fails to bring out the best in him. Pesci, Keitel and Al Pacino are also firing on all cylinders. An enthralling crime epic from our best living filmmaker. A forceful, astounding work of cinematic art.

  • Filipe F. Coutinho's rating of the film The Irishman

A commanding film that works as both a document of the dirty secret history of American politics and as a revisionist piece of cinema. The Irishman addresses the criticism of some of Scorsese’s gangster films, but also delves into the filmmaker’s own sense of place in history, one enamored with the spirit of youth. As the tagline of the film implies— “time changes nothing.” Scorsese continues to be a trailblazer.

  • jjk's rating of the film The Irishman

Aside from the ontological crisis this film exhibits, it’s ultimately a boring slog. brief glimmers of good filmmaking (the Pacino hit sequence is a masterful example of the value of establishing filmic geography in creating tension) mixed in with a whole load of dead air. The study of aging is the most interesting thing in the film, it’s a shame to have to wait 3 hours for it to finally turn its attention to it

  • Zachary T.'s rating of the film The Irishman

More “The Godfather” than “Goodfellas” even if it is a mournful, slower and subtler reinvention of the latter film’s storytelling mechanisms. I was rarely and barely cognizant of the de-aging as De Niro, Pacino, and an against-type Pesci implement verbal ticks and physicality for different ages, taking us through decades of tantalizing hypotheses of the Mafia’s intersection with politics. Scorsese is GOAT.

  • Josh the Bookseller's rating of the film The Irishman

Don't be deterred by the 210 min runtime & the deepfake hullabaloo: it's a marvelous twilight of Scorsese's--and his cast's--careers. It's funny, tragic, savage; of his crime joints, it's Marty's most brazenly moralistic. So good I only relieved my small bladder once. By which I mean, wait for the Netflix drop.

  • Not A Sexy Vampire's rating of the film The Irishman

Happy I saw this on the big screen, a sprawling crime epic with stellar performances by the main trio (Pesci esp.). While it may occasionally get too plotty, the casually haunting last half hour is some of my favourite work Scorsese has ever done. It acts as an elegy for the crime film genre, closing the book on Scorsese's preoccupations with an achingly poignant last shot that feels like a riff on The Godfather.

•'s rating of the film The Irishman

A reincarnation of an earlier mob world with the unions and organised crime in NY inviting assassins to “paint the door”, kill and cremate, bribe politicians and pull in extortion monies from restaurants and small businessses. It is told by Robert de Niro in his ageing voice but revealed through his new CGI digital skin, that renders him back to his younger self of the sixties.Great performances from Pacino and Pesci
