Although its most marvellous part is the animation credits sequence, Herz's fairytale allegory of authoritarianism and its pretensions to freezing Time (and, hence, putting History to a halt) may suffer from some indecisiveness and lack of nerve in the film's 1st half, yet its atmospheric entry into the subterranean realm of the underworld yields rewards, mostly in the superb ballroom sequence(s). Not great but good.
Another fairy tale of Herz, this one a very classical with a beautiful princess, a righteous hero, a magic cloak, a love story and a challenge to solve. Ninth Heart combines light-heartedness with darkness, the candyworld of the court and the romanticised life of the puppet theatre with the surreal underworld of the evil astrologist (yes, they are evil). I have to admit: I had the best time in the underworld.
