I'm a sucker for historical fiction books so my love for Ken Follet clouds my judgement on this one. No heir, anarchy, gothic architecture, public executions, the curse of a pregnant lover, infidels and cheaters af & your usual dose of violent and bloody core of medieval pious morals.
Epic drama historic drama based upon Ken Follett's magnum opus has a lot of entertainment value and looks good on screen though a bigger budget would have helped a lot - especially in the battle sequences. Natalia Wörner has a very thick German accent that is distracting and disappoint somewhat and the series ends with an unsurprising "villain falls down to his death" scene that disappoints.
I liked the old tragic drama style and how it played on the theme of destiny and blind faith. I want to give it 4, but sometimes the plot was too annoyingly obvious, the villains were too over-the-top, and there's way too many gratuitous sex scenes--almost like a discount Game of Thrones.
