Basically films that were conceived in some way from another production and cannot exist without the original.

1) A film compiled together using the original’s outtakes.
2) Behind-the-scenes footage compiled together to make a film. BtS documentaries alone don’t qualify unless they’re doing something different with the material.
3) A separate film that was made using the original’s budget (i.e. two films for the price of one).
4) Re-edit of the original to form something new.
5) A short film or draft that was later expanded into a feature film.
My list is arranged to have the weird ‘twin’ first followed by the original. In the case of Example 5, however, the earlier ‘draft’ will be presented first as it is usually lesser known than the later feature.
Feel free to suggest any along with their originals!
Les Gloutonnes (1973-4) – This is actually a porn mutant that shares similarities with multiple films. Les Exploits érotiques de Maciste dans l’Atlantide (1973) is the real twin of The Lustful Amazons. Originally, Franco was hired to just direct Amazons but managed to convince Robert de Nesle to let him shoot another Maciste film using the same budget. Two Macistes for the price of one if you will. The Esmeralda inserts in La maldicion de Frankenstein (1973) contain similar footage shot during l’Atlantide. Later, De Nesle had Franco shoot porn inserts for the 1974 mutant. Similar porn inserts from the same 1974 shoot can also be found in Les Croqueuses, the porn version of La Comtesse Perverse. Furthermore, Les Croqueuses is a porn hybrid that contains genes from Lorna the Exorcist, taking the form of a comedic subplot starring Lina Romay and Caroline Rivière at La Grande Motte. Far out! I hope this makes sense.
Crypt of the Condemned (2012) – This is a re-edit of A Bad Day at the Cemetery. There is also Crypt of the Condemned II. I believe both Crypt films were originally one but Franco decided to split them for time reasons.
Other ‘Twins’ that aren’t on Mubi:
Zulawski’s Possession -the US release from 1983 is much shorter, with a completely different score and ridiculous psychodelic optical effects. (Suggested by henridecorinth)
There are two completely different versions of Leone’s Once Upon A Time in America -the original 230-minute version and a drastically shortened 145-minute version for a 1984 release that is incomprehensible (Leone originally wanted it to be a 6-hour epic divided into two films!). Her Fragrant Emulsion (1987) – Lewis Klahr manipulates footage of Mimsy Farmer in Road to Salina (1969).
” …bits of cut-up film are glued and taped to clear film leader, then force-fed through a projector and rephotographed, giving the final scratched and blurred images a distinctly handmade feel….The original material has been cut into jagged vertical strips and the images look like animated strips of photo stills. The mutilated pictures seem to float side to side. They jostle the dirty leader for space, creating an internal montage in which they are read not only in succession but in tandem.” – Manhola Dargis, Village Voice
Buzzards Over Bagdad + Respectable Creatures – The rushes of Jack Smith’s first film Buzzards was integrated into Respectable Creatures, a collage that also comprises of outtakes from Normal Love, Yellow Sequence, and other miscellaneous footage.
A Night to Dismember: The original 80-minute version contains a stronger supernatural element and the original score. This version was supposedly lost in a fire at the print lab, though a version appeared for the first time on youtube in 2018…The re-edited 1983 version created an entirely different narrative around the surviving footage and had to rely on stock music and narration, resulting in a more conventional slasher film. Both are unique though…the embryo splitting in two. (Suggested by henridecorinth)
Legion (1990) – Director’s cut of The Exorcist III. A lot of footage was removed and new footage added to create The Exorcist IIILes mindre
