Recensies

The difficulties escalanted from the start, and nuance went out the window. As did character. And budget. And social context. . . . It was Hellzapoppin’ with no topical jokes (the Broadway version had opened with Hitler speaking Yiddish), Laugh-In with no laughs.

One of Steven Spielberg’s most underrated films is not only a virtuoso piece of filmmaking but a flagrant piece of mean-spiritedness and teenage irreverence that underlines aspects of his work that his more popular and commercially successful works tend to either disguise or rationalize.

  • josé neves's rating of the film 1941

TV. One of the most overlooked and simultaneously best Spielberg's films, from the decade in which his narrative lightness had not been shortened and rewritten by its increasingly unbearable productive weight and consequent provability. In this film, the availability to play is overwhelming - it is, in fact, one of the last North-American films that wisely review the classical heritage of slapstick and the absurd.

  • ASHES IN THE HOURGLASS's rating of the film 1941

Proof that people are too sensitive and refuse to give something a chance. It's a bit of mess as it's a bit closer to a series of gags than one whole story. But by god, look at these ideas and the scale of it all. The last gag with the house made me lose my shit. Plus, it's not like it mocks JUST America. The Japanese are equally loony. BTW, Spielberg needs to make a musical, because that dance sequence is awesome.

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film 1941

It can't even get big laughs from Belushi, but somewhere between Spielberg and Animal House lies a mesmerizing fascination: the way the juvenile nature of its approach—historical turning point as Mad Magazine tableau—falls into meaningful harmony with a view of America as a land of rowdy, horny, childish, movie-crazed, trigger-happy yokels and toy soldiers. Sarcasm? More like patriotism. "Why we fight", certainly.

  • Ethan's rating of the film 1941

This movie had all the ingredients to be great movie but Speilberg's overpowered his art and we got this two hours of pure insanity. If John Belushi had not been in this film it would have been a total loss.

  • Weena Eloi's rating of the film 1941

This is a truly bizarre film by Steven Spielberg. Worth watching just for the diverse cast. I saw it at the theater in '79; it was a huge flop at the time and almost sunk Spielberg's career. Luckily, he came back swinging in 1982 with "E.T." and that shut everybody the hell up.

  • LiG's rating of the film 1941

This is a darn good time at the movies. People probably dislike it because it's a WW2 multi-character wacky comedy. If not for that reason, I don't know why and it's irrelevant. I will watch this any day over any Indiana Jones film. Plus, Toshiro Mifune, Christopher Lee, and Slim Pickens in the same scene! They don't make them like this anymore.

  • FISCHER's rating of the film 1941

    >>> Une histoire complètement délirante où l'on découvre, entre autres, les effets d'une bombardier sur une séduisante Américaine, l'obsession du canon et de la défense chez un Yankee moyen et la passion secrète d'un général cinéphile. Cinquième long métrage de Spielberg, beaucoup moins connu que ses autres réalisations, qui déçoit fortement par sa morne surenchère de gags élimés... www.cinefiches.com

  • Federico Di Folco's rating of the film 1941
