Banana Pancakes and the Children of Sticky Rice

Geregisseerd door Daan Veldhuizen
Nederland, 2014
Documentaire

Samenvatting

When backpackers come to a small village in rural Laos, their arrival divides the local population and disrupts the relationship between two childhood friends. A complex East-meets-West story, told in a cinematographic language that is as rich as it is confrontational.

Recensies

With all of the tonal and aesthetic shifts, the treading into the dubious and discomfiting terrain shared by natives and tourists, it’s hard to know just what to make of the film and its maker (who impressively, if a touch too slickly, also photographed and edited). But it’s the not knowing, and furthermore being allowed not to know, that makes Banana Pancakes and the Children of Sticky Rice something remarkable.

Early on, director Daan Veldhuizen attends a village meeting at which one resident endorses the documentary filming, saying that people who see the movie might be inspired to visit; not surprisingly, this sometimes feels like a tourism ad. Veldhuizen presents Europeans interacting cheerily with Laotians and reflecting on how much they enjoy the simple life of the village.

Veldhuizen intended to make the film feel like a journey and he sets up the documentary like a three-stage rocket. What comes first is an observation of the village and its inhabitants in an almost anthropological manner. Then tourism arrives, and eventually friction arises between the protagonists and the filmmaker himself. The documentary slowly shifts from an observational to a more participatory mode.
