A charming, stylish, neglected masterpiece but a little bit on the silly side and rather dragged out. Feels French, not British. Well worth seeing. Beautiful photography, good music (Georges Auric). Well directed by Young before he descended into the worthless horror of Bond. Edna recommends this one.
Edana Romney was so much more than a pretty face. What a presence! She wrote this as Britain's answer to Cocteau's "La Belle et la Bête", a romantic fantasy art film. Not what I would call a "vanity production". Yes, the emphasis is on the visuals, as it was with Cocteau's fairy tale, but the story line is interesting enough to keep one's attention. A lovely, dated film that I've watched many times and still enjoy.
