This movie has gotten an insane amount of backlash since it's release. I remember watching it on a whim around 2005 and loving it unabashedly. Now, I'm older, more mature, more versed in cinema and fully aware of Garden State's flaws, contrivances, pretensions, what have you - but I still enjoy it.
By far the most embarrasing Manic Pixie Dream Girl -characters in film ever, played by the completely overrated Natalie Portman. A muse with no ambitions, feelings or life of her own, with only purpose of existance to please the man.
Exactly what a depressed and bored egocentric guy needs to feel better, so he can continue to do wathever his depression kept him from.
Not my generation, so it was not about capturing the zeitgeist for me. I found this to be inoffensive. Now, I know that people sometimes find inoffensive movies to be offensive, but not I. However, if you find some things in it to be offensive (such as the manic pixie dream girl), feel free to vent - I won't push back.
That era when it started being cool to be an anxiety ridden eccentric. Garden State's feet are firmly planted in the early 00's out of which it doesn't seem to breakout. Kinda like Harold & Maude. Could've been something more. Two point five seems like the right spot for this one.
