Verenigde Staten, Argentinië, 2002
Drama, Avontuur, Mysterie

Samenvatting

Friends Gerry and Gerry hike into Death Valley, but they stray so far from the trail that they struggle to get back. Initially, they maintain morale by rehashing old stories and reciting inside jokes, but the gravity of their situation sinks in as a return to civilization becomes more unlikely.

For me, Gerry is the movie that Van Sant was born to make: a deceptively minimalist comedy based loosely on a true story, with an aesthetic inspired by the severe, long-take style of the Hungarian master director Béla Tarr (whose influence the director readily admitted).

Just like the disoriented characters, we get lost in the magnificent landscapes and endless deserts of Death Valley. Gerry was like nothing Van Sant had done before, a welcome provocation in line with the work of the Hungarian director Béla Tarr.

…Gerry reveals itself as a ravishing mix of mystic fairy tale, modern-day alienation, and gay allegory. Affleck’s Gerry puts great trust in the other Gerry’s ability to save him from a physical quandary and to later elevate him to a spiritual one… Not since his first film, Mala Noche, has Van Sant produced a film so pure, uncompromising, and ravishing to watch.

magnificent landscapes for an act of euthnasia. useless tragedy, useless self-murder by murdering your friend = absurdity.

  • Lights in the Dusk's rating of the film Gerry

Every so often, Van Sant makes a film that convinces me he's the best American filmmaker of his generation. Gerry is one such film. It's a work that finds drama in a changing landscape; a masterpiece of mood & meditation, where the prolonged movement of actors wandering aimless towards oblivion, becomes more thrilling than any Marvel set-piece. It's a film that becomes a mirror, reflecting our own existential dread.

When despair reigns, the silver lining is that melancholy and art make the best of friends. There is so much beauty in this cinematic articulation, even in the unsympathetic ambiguities and that questionable denouement. One of the finest evocations of the wilderness, figuratively and literally. Poetic minimalist cinema that lingers in the mind well after viewing beyond all rational reason.

  • anarresti's rating of the film Gerry

Such a masterpiece of cinematography and scene composition. The narrative is mostly told with the landscape. This is a film in which every single shot just fills the screen, and the characters put life and expression into it. With a strong and classic cumplicity with photography and at times some influence from comics. Masterful use of sound and music, that fills the voids with the same character as the motion does.

  • Joe Hackman's rating of the film Gerry

More tedious than Elephant & Last Days but still quite the feat with all those tracking shots. I assumed it was Steadicam but the BTS film showed that they built miles of dolly track and had a crane which is quite the technical feat. Affleck and Damon are okay. I wish that we got more out of the characters but it aimed for simplicity and succeeded.

  • Kelvane's rating of the film Gerry

There are some truly magnificent moments in this film. Like the rising sun scene with the two limply trotting around in circles like zombies. I fu**ing love that shot. Also, I enjoy the inconsequential conversation about conquering Thebes---I surmise Van Sant included such dialogue to make it feel real, and for the most part it works. But, in the end, I do not care for the characters or for their doomed fates.

  • Phil Worfel's rating of the film Gerry

The definition of haunting. Wonderful experiment in improvisation and form over story beats and structure. I haven't necessarily wanted to go back there but the experience is cemented in my psyche. Damon and Affleck are tremendous.

  • Samuel T.'s rating of the film Gerry

Double feature this with Dumont's gem TWENTYNINE PALMS. That double feature might be titled: "Get high, Get low."
