Based on the speculative novel by Joe Gores, the story concerns real-life detective novelist Dashiell Hammett (Frederic Forest), who early in his career becomes unexpectedly involved in a complex mystery involving the disappearance of a beautiful Chinese cabaret actress in San Francisco.
