Stunning, gorgeous, laugh-out loud funny. Max Ernst's character is funnier when you know it's Max Ernst. Great scorpions. Historical masterpiece and sublime surrealist document. I could rave on and on but if you remember it you weren't there.
This is where truly modern cinema began, and maybe we're finally catching up. Extraordinary sound design at the birth of the talkie, grim black humor, savage irony, the drums of Calanda, and a jaunty pasodoble at the end. In 60 minutes this masterpiece of the visual and the tactile destroys society's hypocritical morals when the latter reside in the irrational mania for wealth's accumulation and the violence that supports it. A scorpio's sting really, its blend of psychoanalysis, Sadean nihilism and surreal iconoclasm includes the cretinism of the working class among its targets and serves as a mirror of our own sexual ridiculousness.
