Two sisters are fighting for social change in ’60s Germany, but their means are different. The younger, Marianne, joins the political underground, while Juliane is a journalist. When Marianne is arrested, Juliane visits her in prison. As they grow closer, Marianne is suddenly found dead in her cell.

One of Ingmar Bergman’s 11 favorite films, this is a personal portrayal of the relationship between sisters at the forefront of political struggle in severely different ways. Inspired by Baader-Meinhof’s Gudrun Ensslin and her sister Christine, the film won the Golden Lion at Venice in 1981.
