This concern with the manipulation of political imagery culminates in the final film of the trilogy, No, a brilliantly incisive (and mostly true) satire… As in his previous films, politics becomes inseparable from performance, but No’s smeared imagery also signals the director’s distaste for Saavedra’s neoliberal ideology and shallow manipulations.

There’s still evidence of the director’s darker notions about the power of artifice and the marketing of politics rumbling below No’s narrative, but the film is less angry than melancholic. It’s a note of restraint, a subtle shift in sensibilities for the director, and it echoes throughout Larraín’s latest and solidifies his stature as an artist of distinct moral and historical outrage.

Larrain has created a seamless spectacle that washes over the viewer, making it extremely difficult to separate the real from the staged, or to actively analyze, shot for shot, what we’re seeing. And so No is both a crowd-pleasing, satisfying narrative entertainment and a highly sophisticated conceptual object — perhaps the ultimate Situationist movie.

  • ehk2's rating of the film No

It doesn't praise or prioritize political marketing over political idealism or grassroots activism. A very realistic depiction of politics in mass media era -cynic maybe- (surely, the yes vote made possible in Chile not just because of a single ad. This is a dramatization). A viewer can and should watch a movie critically. Intelligent, thought-provoking, self-reflexive product & especially relevant for Turkey now

  • abc's rating of the film No

For someone who knows little about this topic, I enjoyed watching the film for some insight. What I particularly found interesting was showing the impact of how advertising, campaigning, and a positive vision can do. Acting and creating visuals that almost mimic that time is an excellent way to take us back as if we were a fly on the wall

  • Max Seqgar's rating of the film No

Marketers & advertisings are truly destined to be unsung heroes. Great historical film & acting.

  • Andre Rehal's rating of the film No

This was a great little film about a period of time that I have little to knowledge about. Shooting it on the video equipment of the time was also a nice touch as it gave an immediacy that wouldn't have been there otherwise.

  • T. J. Mesen's rating of the film No

Easily interpreted as a fight against oppression or #change feel-good film, the epilogue exposes a transition to a time of vapidity and excess—lending to a more ambiguous reading. Its focus is the power of media and propaganda (able to bring down a military dictatorship) as well as the struggle between two colleagues-cum-rivals, downplaying the NO's victory to show their own purposely anti-climatic emotional release.

  • anarresti's rating of the film No

Great cinematography. Feels like it was shot at the time the events took place. Very interesting movie. It offers, probably, what is a fraction of what led to Pinochet's regime fall. But it's fascinating to see how saying/voting no to the dictator and its regime was built and presented in blocs of 15 minutes, with limited budget and resources, to an audience that had been fed only oficial news. Very interesting.

  • Pierluigi Puccini's rating of the film No

Skillful, witty and in the end sour depiction of the deceptive power behind the media and the profound divisions of ideology and socioeconomical types in latin america. Either a denounce of the general public indiference and the futility of the democratic triumph or an important footnote in the short term mass media events that could shake or actually bring down a de facto government.

  • HEDONIST's rating of the film No

From the 80's era video-tape medium, to the wardrobe, to the cars on the street, the stylization of this film is unparalleled. The juxtaposition of archive footage with the antiquated videography serves even more to enhance the emotional impact of this powerful political drama.
