Although conflict is less central to Out Of Sight than in the Ocean’s trilogy, it similarly comes down to treachery versus trickery, with antagonists who represent the antithesis of the movie’s artistry: They are overarmed, greedy, fractious, and don’t know how to take their time. What makes its unlikely love story work is that, like Out Of Sight itself, it’s ultimately about pleasure.

The best film version of a Leonard novel… Psychological time, stop-time, stolen moments as if in plain sight. A movie can do things that words cannot express.

I didn’t believe anything that happened in Out of Sight for a millisecond, but it became clear early on that I wasn’t supposed to. Based on an Elmore Leonard novel I haven’t read and chock-full of familiar faces—including a couple who aren’t credited—the film lives exclusively on generic expectations, not on notions about life or personality that exist independent of other movies.

A bit of Stanley DONEN's rhythm & spirit, of HITCHCOCK's elegance & lightness & TARANTINO's humor. SODERBERG offers a sparkling & lively cocktail from start to finish. === Un mix de l'esprit de Stanley DONEN, du charme d'HITCHCOCK & de l'humour de TARANTINO. SODERBERG offre un cocktail pétillant & vif du début à la fin. === GUZMAN, RHAMES, FARINA, KEATON, CHEADLE, ALLEN, JACKSON, what a cast!

This is the best Tarantino film that wasn't directed by Tarantino himself. Soderbergh does Tarantino better than all the other imitators out there and almost better than the man himself. Clooney and Lopez are spectacular as they play off of each other beautifully showing off what makes them great. They also have a great supporting cast of Soderbergh and Tarantino regulars who make this one cool film.

Out of Sight: the emblematic film of a late-90s popular culture. There is an engagement w/ pulp which involves great dexterity and the retention of commendable artistry. There is also a very sly dialogue at work (under the sheets) regarding what movie stars at this point had become for us, and about how we desire to see them deployed. Keaton's return as Ray Nicolette one year later is a great moment in postmodernity.

Oscar nominated script by Scott Frank from the Elmore Leonard novel was superb but it was the sexual chemistry between J. Lopez and G. Clooney that made this film just sing. Exceptionally well cast with great turns from Cheadle, Farina, Zahn, Brooks and Washington as well. Sizzling hot with memorable camera work by Elliot Davis too. 'You wanted to tussle, we tussled' 'do you ever wear one that says undercover'

When I was younger I loved it for its post-Tarantino affectations, casual violence, sharp script and unconventional (to me) directorial choices. Today, I'm more impressed by its subtle characterisations, its themes of disappointment, spent-time and last chances, and the melancholic romanticism of the central relationship.

  • Dave's rating of the film Out of Sight

Liked some individual parts/sequences, but on the whole, it never completely meshed for me...which was ultimately a bit frustrating. A 3/5 for me.

Soderbergh does Elmore Leonard. It works. It is very interesting to contrast this one to Tarantino's "Jackie Brown" as they are both Leonard stories adapted by contemporaries of the Sundance Institute. But the feel is drastically different. Soderbergh goes for a noir feel more akin to Leonard's work. It has a story that is layered and well told, the performances aren't bad either. A good relaxing mystery.

This is a wonderful film. Great cast. It is a wonder to behold. The sequence between Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney in the trunk of the car is one of the sexiest ever filmed. You can feel their attraction. It is a pity that Lopez did not make more films like this where her natural toughness and beauty can counterpoint each other. Clooney is aces, as is Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, and Albert Brooks. Soderbergh Rocks!
