It is no doubt politically problematic, yet if one can take it without involving oneself in the issues of historical memory, there is a hell of a movie to be found here, showcasing the ugliness, absurdity and sheer madness that is war.
I'm torn about how I feel about Lepa sela. It's without an incredibly well-directed film with strong visual and atmospheric character, and it's one of few films to use non-linear storytelling without it being intrusive. And the "but" here isn't that it's propaganda – Dragojević is not Kusturica. Rather, he's someone who bought into others' propaganda; the last word about Lepa Sela must be negative because of it.
