There’s a pure pleasure to seeing Spielberg doing Kubrick again, both paying tribute to a friend with whom he had an unexpected artistic symbiosis (A.I. is nearly as good as anything either of them did, after all) and poking fun at his own commercial instincts.

Only Spielberg’s use of The Shining is really noteworthy, because it includes lots of actual footage from the film, over which Spielberg has pasted his Scooby-Doo action. Spielberg loves Kubrick so much he has done him the favor of defacing his work in public, something the director of Lolita, being dead, could not agree to or prevent.

Its extravagant effects are never as involving as Mark Rylance’s all-too-human performance as the ghost in the OASIS’s machine. But it offers a glut of eye-popping toy-box set pieces (including an extended homage to one of Spielberg’s fellow film titans) from the Hollywood master of the form. It’s all about small screens, but is best seen on a really big one.

The Zemeckis Cube and "The Shining" as a videogame. You sure surprised me hard, Spielberg. The best homage to 70s and 80s kids.

  • Jason's rating of the film Ready Player One

By virtue of the kind of art and culture upon which I tend to feast, I have had little exposure to materials that might have adequately prepared me for the harrowing inundation of READY PLAYER ONE. It's a bulldozer, man. There was considerable synaptic overload. I am fascinated by the general God's-eye-view of the network and the whole goddamn insane Philip K. Dick I CHING majesty of this decadent motherfucker.

  • Lights in the Dusk's rating of the film Ready Player One

There's something prescient & profound about the idea of connecting to someone after death through the relics of their online presence, but I don't think the theme is well suited to this particular film. For me the weakest of Spielberg's sci-fi works, RP1 is a blur of noise & pop-culture appropriation, which is satisfying when engaging with the initial "hunt", but less so in its disingenuous anti-corporate rhetoric.

  • Daniel S.'s rating of the film Ready Player One

The idea of earning several trillion dollars by playing a video game gives me nausea. As I don't only judge a film according to its subject no matter how idiotic its screenplay may be, I must say that the Spielberg treatment of 'Ready Player One' is dynamic and spellbinding. I liked the multiple references about movies that most of the actual audience will not understand I suppose. A fresh movie of an old director.

  • smndvdcl's rating of the film Ready Player One

An anti-corporate message appropriated by a corporation. Admittedly, RPO is an engaging spectacle, but as David Foster Wallace once said, "How is one to be bona fide iconoclast when Burger King sells onion rings with 'Sometimes You Gotta Break the Rules'?" Corporatocracy continues to weaponise irony.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Ready Player One

Even if this was just a breakneck nostalgia fest, a game of 'spot your favorite intellectual property,' it would still feature action sequences shot and cut by one of the greatest practitioners of the form. Thankfully, we also got a quietly melancholy performance from Mark Rylance, underscoring the sad truth that so much of the fascination with all this media is a form of regression. "Why can't we go backwards?"

  • Duncan Gray's rating of the film Ready Player One

No futuristic dystopia that includes the phrase "corn syrup drought" is blind to its own irony, and somewhere between Spielberg's wondrous regard for a brave new world and the cheeky tint of satire, this ends up as a preposterously goofy movie that has more going on in it than most goofy movies do. In the end, online fandom doesn't deserve this much credit, but cheers to the heart—you have unlocked Mark Rylance.

  • Tigrão's rating of the film Ready Player One

It's definitely a fun ride, filled with nostalgic references, but it's way too Luc Besson-ish for me. I'm sorry, I just don't really like watching a movie nearly entirely made in CGI, it's personal. Where the movie succeeds, it's on the emotional level, something Marvel/DC has been failing to do for years now.
