There are many jarring lapses: the exclusion of Susan from the pioneering trip to another dimension; the depiction of Ben as a bullying victim who learns his war cry (“It’s clobbering time”) from an abusive brother; character arcs that stop dead when superpowers manifest; the deliberate exclusion of humour and charm from the mix (not even a Stan Lee cameo)…

…Up to [a] point, the movie is methodically constructed like a Rube Goldberg device; it’s vaguely reminiscent of the work of Steven Soderbergh, with an emphasis on process and behind-the-scenes relations. But some of the most overtly dramatic elements of the plot… seem clumsily stuck onto the movie, like public-service announcements interrupting the film’s drifty, droll, subtly ominous flow to declare the presence of drama.

All four principals—Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell—are well cast, and their gee-whiz idealism is just right for the wide-eyed perspective of director Josh Trank. His film turns into yet another special effects showcase once the quartet gain superpowers, but at least the effects look good.

  • Trevor Tillman's rating of the film Fantastic Four

There are times, particularly in the first half, where you can sense that this had greatness within its grasp. Conceptually, a Fantastic Four movie that fits within Fox's library of science fiction greatness, with shades of Cronenberg and Ridley Scott, could've been brilliant. However, it's clear that whatever film this could've been was hobbled before production reached the finish line.

  • HKFanatic's rating of the film Fantastic Four

Ignoring for a moment this "Four's" lack of fidelity to the comic book, there's at least enough to this dark and depressive film's DNA to suggest it could have been an interesting subversion of the superhero genre: what if your newfound powers weren't a blessing - but instead a horrific mutation that caused your own body to betray you? Sadly, the film as released is far too compromised to judge on its own merits.

  • Huey McEvoy's rating of the film Fantastic Four

Films like this do have value, in that we get to see how easily a production can go wrong. It starts off fine, for what it is - the cast do well, conjuring up a sense of tension and intrigue. But - as with most things - as soon as they get drunk, things fall apart. Badly. So congratulations to any film maker who manages to present a finished work that at least makes sense - this makes such a goal look *hard*.

  • Addy K.'s rating of the film Fantastic Four

Call me crazy—I really liked the subdued and mellifluous first-half of FANTASTIC FOUR. So Josh Trank set his Hollywood career on fire, but let's also give him the benefit of the doubt. The guy has balls to match the huge ego…plus, it doesn't take a genius to realize what parts *he did not film*. For better or worse, discussing the disastrous making of F4 will always be far more interesting than discussing F4 itself.

  • Scorpio Velvet's rating of the film Fantastic Four

A rather okay reboot on Marvel's classic superteam. From seeing the trailers for this, I felt no interest about how this new film was (although, I prefer the original 2005). Then seeing it last night, my final thoughts were that it did had some good visul effects and how the team looked while the film certainly had it flaws. Nothing special or new really, but still okay overall.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Fantastic Four

So after the lackluster reviews for the last adaptation of this potential franchise the powers that be decided to make them what...the superfriends? Ridiculous in conception and execution this shall be the proverbial final nail in the coffin for this bunch. Poorly cast, terribly written and even pretty sub-standard production wise. Hard to pick the worst performance here but Reg Cathey and Toby Kebbell are awful.

  • Steve Pulaski's rating of the film Fantastic Four

Not spectacularly bad, like most reviewers are claiming, but definitely the worst superhero film in recent memory. It's unbelievably slow, and simultaneously so short, that, despite a glacial pace, nothing is develop, no character development is reached, and that ending *shivers*.
