I don't think I have ever seen a movie this innocent and sweet. It has such a beautiful story and great camerawork following the boy and the balloon through Paris. So much is told with little words.
Eventually it gets a bit repetitive, but the short length never lets it fall into redundance.
The ending is just sublime, goosebump-inducing really.
Ce ballon rouge vif tranche dans un Paris sombre, grisâtre et pluvieux. Il n’a certes ni traits, ni voix, mais il est doté d’une personnalité : il est d’une fidélité sans pareille! Une demi heure de légèreté et de douceur.
The red balloon is the ultimate cinematic personification. This half-hour gem of a film is utterly simple, endearingly imaginative and still retains its wow factor six decades on.
Also, it's a film that restores one's esteem for the innocence of youth, whilst challenging the evils of bullying and simultaneously praising the spirit of adventure. A standalone classic.
