This movie is one of the best I've seen in recent years. The harrowing yet understated tone and feel of the movie, the terrifying and tragic turn by Considine, the awesome acting by Kebbell, the inspired soundtrack choices, the gritty and realistic setting. In my book this movie can do no wrong! A true five star experience.
Another film that walks the line between revenge and carnage, and begs the audience to consider whether Richard is any better than the torturers of his brother. The black and white aesthetic of the "remembered" events was weak, but otherwise it looked great. Gorgeous landscapes and unsavoury characters in every scene, with Paddy Considine as an absolutely menacing vigilante.
Its gritty and raw style feels more plain and modest, the kitchen-sink drama herein feels more like the silly morality play of an After School Special. All characters’s have a single trait, with even Consadine’s often-praised performance lacking in range out of a stray smile or two. Watchable... but also arch and tedious. This alleged modern revenge classic is just stiff and overrated.
Death Wish meets What's Eating Gilbert Grape meets Trainspotting meets The Sixth Sense. I think there's some Toad the Wet Sprocket and Mormon Tabernacle Choir in there too.
And yet it somehow manages to still fail.
But at least the British middle class can still rely on the military's instinct to throw itself on the sword before things get so bad that the wife and kids miss low tea.
