Rewatched because I read the book. An interesting expansion of the novel (which is largely in Ari's head, difficult to visualise). As a film, it's not always effective, and tends to drag, as we lose the interiors that made Ari such a fascinating character. He is still defined by his frustration, but we miss the nuance. Blowjob scene towards the end acts as a great example of the way sex scenes can speak to character.
Existential musings of a hedonistic boy through a night journey in an Australian city, his definitive realization that his life is his own,and nothing can come between - not his strict cultural upbringing, definitely not the double jeopardy imposed upon his being gay and foreign. The film's unrelenting depiction of sexuality and alienation is triumphantly presented by the sensitive direction and truthful performances
