The third Highlander film returns to the series’ original, awe-inspiring premise. It starts off in the 15th century, with Connor McLeod training with another immortal swordsman, the Japanese sorcerer Nakano.

"Highlander" is one of those rare occurrences in the sci-fi genre: the premise just begs to be a franchise and yet the ending of the first film left no room for a sequel. The issue with this entry is that it lacks ambition. It's little more than an uninspired remake of the first movie, with Mario Van Peebles delivering a performance so bizarre and misguided it seems beamed in from 'the final dimension' itself.
Number II is decapitated from canon thus starting the pockets of alternative time frames that would plague the McLeod family through the sequels. Without immortal aliens and Sean Connery as a resurrected Spaniard, this falters but bring pretty lights, and Mario Van Peebles becoming a Mongolian death metal pimp and eating a condom, and all is right.
After the misguided second film, I would think that it was possible to guide the franchise back on track with this one as it at least tries to return to the original premise and explore a "hidden story from the past". The problem is that there is nothing that ties back to the original as the ultimate bad guy is already dead so who is this new crazy over-the-top Djenghis Khan wannabe? Mario in drug frenzy?
