Our take

Due to the rarity of films coming out of Guatemala, Ixcanul made a sensation when premiering at the Berlinale, where it won the Silver Bear. A young Indigenous woman is the center of this visually hypnotic, emotionally subdued and strikingly poignant film, slowly burning until its final eruption.
