Recenzje krytyków

Woody’s lines were certainly wackier back in the day (“We could be living next door to a murderer!”; “Well, you know, New York is a melting pot…”), and the significance of something so blithe coming out after Mia-gate can’t be overstated – but it drove me nuts watching Allen and Keaton hit the same note over and over, and the visual inelegance is hard to ignore.

Keaton hadn’t worked with Allen since Manhattan in 1979 (except to do a fleeting cameo in Radio Days), but you’d never know it based on their chemistry here. As Carol and Larry Lipton, they’re essentially Annie Hall and Alvy Singer as an old married couple, and there’s something instantly heartening about their comfortable, easy banter. It’s like an alternate future in which love triumphed and turned to wedded bliss.

While the movie is no masterpiece, it represents both a significant (albeit tentative) advance in Allen’s work as art and an agreeable (if uneven) return to his practice of “simply” entertaining. Which is to say it’s less successful than Annie Hall but more provocative than Crimes and Misdemeanors – and certainly a lot funnier than Shadows and Fog.
