Molly Bloom’s (Jessica Chastain’s) pre-poker career as an Olympic skier, her overachieving family, the lengthy trial after her arrest, her problems with the IRS — none of that was interesting. Nor is Sorkin’s exhaustive look at a blade of grass on a ski slope, something he sees as the film’s key image. I came to this movie to play cards, not to learn how to ski.

The first film directed by Aaron Sorkin, who also wrote the script, is dominated by the imaginary clatter of his computer keyboard; the quality of the screenplay takes a back seat to its quantity, and the direction never brings it to life. . . . Molly’s voice-over, which runs throughout the film, explains the logic behind her practical decisions while also detailing the skills and the wiles of poker players, yet Sorkin narrows her analytical intelligence to superficial flash.

Empowerment is one way to look at this story, though only if you sentimentalize its main character. It is hard not to wonder how this movie might have turned out if Mr. Sorkin had decided his protagonist was as much a weasel as the one he wrote for “The Social Network,” another story of an American striver. It’s hard not to wonder, too, how this story might play if its protagonist wasn’t a woman who, as this movie sees it, needed so much male defending.

[That frosted FKA Twig tho!] Sorkin=The Ovid/Dante of Screenwriting. Chastain will give a run for its money to McDormand, Streep, Ronan, Ejogo, Winslet, Mara, Waterston, Portman, Blanchett, Keough, Ridley, Wright, Hoeks, Juri, Armas, Rihanna & Delevingne> long overdue (oh hi Tree of Life) - I reckon this may well be a sort of spiritual successor - character-wise - to that one, here she plays a bawss Mother Nature.

  • Daniel S.'s rating of the film Molly's Game

**1/2. Another vain success story. Writer-Director Aaron Sorkin seems to be fascinated by people earning big money by manipulating other people (Molly's Game) or the entire world (Steve Jobs, The Social Network). If I admire the performance of the actors here, I also have to admit that this peculiar story didn't interest me at all. Almost already forgotten.

  • Ethan's rating of the film Molly's Game

This is a solid film that features incredible performances from Jessica Chastain, who is an absolute knock out in this in every way and Idris Elba who maintains his badass charisma and intensity, making it a rollercoaster ride as these two acting titans take their craft to a whole other level. Sorkin can definitely write some words but his directing is flat and it feels like the actors are what make this film good.

  • Bilouaustria's rating of the film Molly's Game

You can find the story compelling or like Sorkin as writer but the same Sorkin brings all the things i hate in today´s directing, choosing "The Big Short" as model for his heavy filmmaking. Which means cool, overly confident and vulgar, using image only as illustration. The editing cuts as short as possible the dialogues to produce artificial speed but it is all smoke and nothing hides behind this pale Scorsese copy.

  • OFF_FRAME's rating of the film Molly's Game

Interesting enough story that is just absolutely ruined by showy, cliche-riddled writing, murky and dated lighting, way too much voice-over and a cripplingly duration. I smelt a rat the moment her helmet and goggles magically slid up next to her after the ski-accident. 2.5 stars

  • Andhika Eka Buana's rating of the film Molly's Game

The thing about Aaron Sorkin-scripted drama is, it's always Aaron Sorkin's film/show first, everyone else's second, and nothing is more evident about that than MOLLY'S GAME; You don't always need Fincher's exquisite lensing or Boyle's energetic editing to make a good Aaron Sorkin film (though those are all a magnificent bonus in itself). You just need an Aaron Sorkin's script.

  • msmichel's rating of the film Molly's Game

Sorkin's excellent scripting serves him well in his directorial debut as he delivers a fine vehicle for star Jessica Chastain that plays to her strengths. Technically the film is well edited and designed with impressive camerawork from Charlotte Christensen. In the end the film succeeds on the power of its story and framework and the dedicated turn by Chastain.

  • smndvdcl's rating of the film Molly's Game

I'm warming to the star persona of Jessica Chastain. Aaron Sorkin's writer-director credentials have brought out scintillating nuances in characterisation and utilises the strengths of her presence on screen. The exploration of gender politics takes on a new variable. This is not simply a battle of the sexes rendition; contrasting traits of alpha and beta men are explored revealing new layers in the social discourse.
