For Star Trek, this really did surpass expectations. I was beginning to think that Star Trek had run out of fuel but the deconstruction of well-established tropes and introducing more complex characters was rather refreshing. Although when Jason Isaacs turns up you know nothing is going to be completely clear cut.
The series had a great start by deconstructing the idea of the people who make up the Federation (fuck Gene Roddenberry, he was a dirty old man with one good idea). But (SPOILER) by revealing that Lorca is from the Mirror Universe, and that there was a good Lorca, they may have very well ruined this show for me. People aren't good or bad, they are many things.
That said, I like Saru.
