Frightened me the first time I've watched it as a child because the plot dealt with planet creatures invading Earth (also reminds me of George Pal's WAR OF THE WORLDS with the "trying to get everyone out" vibe). The novel was much better when I read it in 8th grade, and I look at the film today as a still-thrilling classic of its genre (glad I'm not scared anymore).
A lot of the sci-fi movies in the 50's were warnings about Communism. 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' for one. The ending is clearly about going to Church, so the metaphor from this one could be anything that the Church fears. And, yes, I really got hot, when I saw Janette Scott fight a Triffid that spits poison and kills.
