Our take

This brooding, Palme d’Or-winning romance across classes, starring Julie Christie & Alan Bates, marks Joseph Losey’s last collaboration with Harold Pinter. With tantalizing flashforwards and gorgeous period details, it explores the deep pull of nostalgia, asking how the past can impact the present.
