While awaiting their husbands’ return, a group of sisters-in-law recount stories from their marriages. Rakel tells of a visit from a former lover; Marta of agreeing to marry only after having the man’s child; Karin of being stuck in an elevator with her husband.

After a commercial flop, Bergman decided to direct a comedy, one centered on the confessions of four women who open up in each other’s presence. Alternating between dialogue-heavy and quasi-silent episodes, Waiting Women is an examination of love and marriage through deep, meaningful conversations.
