Ihei and his wife Tayo, stranded by rains at a country inn, bring a great deal of happiness to the other residents by means of Ihei’s good spirit. He’s a masterless samurai and fencing expert. Ihei comes to the attention of Lord Shigeaki, who hires him as a fencing instructor for his men.

Akira Kurosawa passed away before he was able to film his screenplay for After the Rain, which was directed by his assistant Takashi Koizumi. Set in the early 18th century, this gentle tale portrays with lighthearted compassion a samurai whose kindness bring him both respect and ill-fortune.
